Search Engine Optimization (SEO), also known as organic search, involves those strategies that result in your website showing up higher on the list search results when people search the we for products or services like yours.  So many companies offer silver bullet solutions that can seem so appealing, but wind up doing more harm than good.  Be very careful not to fall for the latest gimmick.  Research a bit yourself before selecting a vendor to assist you!  SEO isn’t a one-and-done endeavor.  It takes staying current with changing search algorithms, understanding how your prospective customers search for products or services like yours, an understanding of how to write web content for optimal search results, how to optimize the data underneath your website, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance.  If anyone tells you otherwise, there is reason to be suspicious!

Sometimes Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is defined more broadly to include organic search or SEO.  For our purposes, we use it to describe those strategies related to buying visitors for your website.  This can also be called pay-per-click (PPC).  You can buy ads from Google or other search engines, invest in ads from specialized digital content networks frequented by your target demographic, buy ads on various social media platforms, or invest in any number of other digital advertising channels.
